Résumé : |
This study investigated and compared the use of electronic dictionaries with book
dictionaries among students in order to develop their vocabulary and enrich their
lexical repertoire. Particular attention is given to this topic since electronic
dictionaries have particularly become popular among Algerian students. Thus it has
become crucial to investigate how such electronic reference along with book
reference are used and what impact they have on vocabulary improvement. we
hypothesize that students use dictionaries to enlarge their vocabulary, yet they are
likely to use electronic dictionaries more than they use book dictionaries. In order to
check the validity of the above mentioned hypothesis, this study investigated this
issue quantitatively via a questionnaire intended to collect data from fifty first year
students at the Department of English, Frères Mantouri Constantine University. The
findings showed that, while students participants reported that they used a
combination of electronic and book dictionaries, they rely more on electronic
dictionaries. They appear to increase the frequency of dictionary consultation. In this
sense, the effect of electronic dictionaries on second language may be positive.
However, electronic dictionaries may not benefit all the students equally; especially
for those who still prefer book ones. For those students, electronic dictionaries may
not necessarily positively influence word retention. Among the pedagogical
implications of these findings is the need for training in the use of both book and
electronic dictionaries in order to help students make the best use of them |
