Résumé : |
The present dissertation aims to shed light on Algerian teachers’ and students’ attitudes
towards dictionary use in general and their preferences in using Bilingual or Monolingual
dictionaries when translating from English into Arabic. The hypothesis put forward is that the
learners prefer to use the bilingual dictionary but the teachers prefer the monolingual one. The
sample of the study consists of two groups of subjects; thirty EFL students and ten translation
teachers from the Department of English and the Department of Translation. Two
questionnaires, one for each group, are issued as tools of research .The results reveal that both
the teachers and the students show positive attitudes towards using dictionaries. In addition,
the great majority of the students prefer to use the English – Arabic bilingual dictionary,
whereas, the majority of translation teachers prefer the English monolingual one. In the light
of the findings, the study puts forward a set of recommendations in order to remedy some of
the students and teachers’ misconceptions related to dictionary use and efficiency. |
