Vocabulary knowledge is an essential part in language learning, especially the writing skill
since it is utilized as a means of transferring the writer’s knowledge to the audience. However,
learners of English as foreign language face many problems related to the lexical aspect of the
language while writing. As a result, it is necessary to look for ways that may help the students
remember the vocabulary they learn and face their writing problems. This study, aims at
showing the importance of vocabulary knowledge and how students can overcome the
difficulties they face when they write, and therefore produce better written texts. To achieve
this aim, a vocabulary test was administered to the students, in addition to their Written
Expression exam marks. The vocabulary test was addressed to forty (40) third year students in
the Department of English at the University of Constantine, seeking to measure the amount of
vocabulary knowledge they possess. Students’ exam marks seek to measure their level in the
writing skill in comparison to their vocabulary knowledge. The correlation between the two
variables (vocabulary knowledge and the writing skill) showed significant results in the areas
of vocabulary knowledge and the writing skill |
