It attempts to shed light on the importance of establishing cooperative group work as an attempt to improve learners’ oral proficiency. The present study is based on one main hypothesis stating that if the teachers use cooperative learning and design appropriate techniques in EFL classes to develop students speaking skill; then learners will feel more comfortable, use English spontaneously and their speaking skill will be enhanced. The method of this research is descriptive that is, it aims to describe two aspects: cooperative group work as the independent variable, and its role in improving learners’ oral proficiency as the dependent variable, to implement this research and confirm our hypothesis, we administered two questionnaires, one for third year LMD students and another one for teachers in the English Department of Frères Mentouri University during the academic year (2017-2018). The outcomes of this research provide evidence that cooperative group work is the right strategy for developing students speaking skill.
