Mixing British English and American English in one written composition is an issue that
negatively influences students’ level and the reliability of their writings. The majority of the
students who are majoring in English as a foreign language are not able to make difference
between the two varieties in terms of vocabulary, spelling and grammar. Thus, the present
research work aims at investigating the ability of second year students at the Department of
English, University of Mentouri, Constantine 1, to distinguish between the aforementioned
aspects of the British variety and their counterparts in the American variety. It is hypothesized
that students would use a hybrid version of English if they are not aware of the differences
between American English and British English. To verify this hypothesis, a questionnaire and
a test were administered to forty 2nd year students. The results reveiled that the participants in
question are not able to distinguish between British and American spelling, vocabulary and
grammar. Therefore, their use of the language would be a mixture of British English and
American English. Accordingly, responsibles and teachers should develop a programme in
order to solve this problem. Students would be able, then, to learn more about the varities of
English and be aware of the differences that exist between the British English and the
American English. |
