Vocabulary is the most important and the most difficult skill in any language. That is why
teachers should be aware of the techniques they use to help university students enhance their
knowledge of foreign vocabulary items. The aim of the present work is to investigate the
improvement of the students’ vocabulary through the implementation of crossword puzzles.
We believe that using vocabulary games may be seen as an entertaining technique that helps
learners to be acquainted with new words, consolidating lexical items and memorizing them.
In this respect, we designed, first, a questionnaire for teachers of oral expression at the
Department of English; the aim was to get information about the importance of using
crossword puzzles, in oral sessions, as a technique to teach vocabulary. The study also implies
a test designed for students; a pre-test where students were given a crossword puzzle to solve,
plus a post-test where learners where asked to fill in the gaps with words they have
memorized form the pre-test. The results showed the effectiveness of this method in
improving the students’ vocabulary knowledge. Learners proved to have learnt some of the
unfamiliar words they have seen in the first session; besides, they were highly motivated and
interested in solving that crossword. Accordingly, it is highly recommended that crossword
puzzles should be used in teaching vocabulary |
