Résumé : |
This thesis presents a psychological and philosophical treatment of Truman
Capote's self-proclaimed term 'nonfiction novel' that he associated with his book In Cold
Blood. In two chapters, it examines his claim of inventing a new literary genre applying
two approaches, a psychoanalytic and a phenomenological approach. First, by considering
the origins of the nonfiction novel and his reasons for turning to it, and then explaining
them with his psychological state of mind through applying an analysis of his childhood
using script theory and attachment theory. Second, by analyzing the characters of the
killers, Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, applying Carl Jung's concept of the shadow and
Sigmund Freud's concept of projection, this shows how Capote identified with them. This
identification that he felt for them could be explained by analyzing Capote's experience of
researching and writing In Cold Blood through applying Edmund Husserl's descriptive
phenomenology using the concepts of the epoché and intentionality. |
