This study aims at showing the effect of using the monolingual dictionary (MD) in
comparison with the bilingual dictionary (BD) on Master One student’s vocabulary
comprehension and acquisition at the English department in frère Mentouri University. We
hypothesize that students using the monolingual dictionary would develop better vocabulary
comprehension and acquisition than those who use the bilingual dictionary. To check this
hypothesis, both a questionnaire was submitted to a population of 32 student and two tests
were submitted to a population of 7 students. The data collected from the questionnaire
implies that the students rely on both dictionaries, but the majority uses the monolingual one,
but in the test the results were not very significant because some of the students used only the
monolingual dictionary in both tests. Hence the hypothesis was partly confirmed and due to
that teachers should work more on teaching students how to use both dictionaries
appropriately. |
