The present study aims at investigating the extent to which the use of meaningful learning
improves students’ acquisition and retention of vocabulary. Interest in this topic stems from the
fact that vocabulary is very significant for language learners and looking for efficient ways, such
as meaningful learning, to teach it is imperative. We hypothesised that the use of the theory of
meaningful learning in the teaching of vocabulary is likely to help first year students to learn
vocabulary items and retain them for a long period of time. In order to verify this hypothesis, two
questionnaires were administered: one to 18 permanent teachers and another to 50 first year
students at the department of English of Brothers Mentouri University, during the academic year
2018-2019. |
