This study is conducted to shed light on the problems that learners encounter while translating
phrasal verbs from English into Arabic. The main concern is to find out the reasons behind
this problem and the appropriate solutions to solve it. For that, it is hypothesised that if
English learners were aware and knew the exact meaning of phrasal verbs in the English
language, they would not give wrong Arabic equivalents. To test the validity of this
hypothesis, the research data are collected using a questionnaire and a test delivered to
twenty-four (24) of first year Master students, Linguistic and Applied Language Studies. The
questionnaire is made up of eight questions about translation in general and phrasal verbs in
particular. The test consists of two exercises; it aims to know the students’ ability to translate
phrasal verbs either in isolation or within the context. The results show that learners failed to
give the right Arabic equivalents of the phrasal verbs because of their ignorance and
insufficient exposer to them. They also show that most learners rely on the context in
translating phrasal verbs which is not always helpful and successful |
