Résumé : |
Learning foreign languages has never been an easy task to accomplish, and getting pupils motivated
and engaged in the learning process depends entirely on different individual, social and
environmental factors. Once again, learning English as a foreign language in the Algerian middle
schools is also presented as a hard experience especially because students are in contact with that
language for the first time, officially. It is noticed that students are affected by the schedule, the
curriculum, the teachers, and highly the classroom environment. Overcrowded classrooms
phenomenon exists in the majority of schools and reflects a negative impact on both teachers and
students. The present study is carried out for the aim of determining the various problems pupils
face while learning in overcrowded classes, more precisely, how the classroom size affects
students‟ motivation to participate orally in the English class. Therefore, it has been hypothesized
that overcrowded classes affect negatively the students‟ motivation to participate orally and develop
their speaking skill as far as the English class is concerned. The study is carried out on students of
third year of Malik Ben Nabi- Middle School in Constantine, Algeria as the research sample. The
research follows a qualitative method through administering a questionnaire to (21) teachers of
English in different middle schools to highlight their attitude about English teaching, the classroom
size and the various problems of overcrowded classes. To get the necessary data, a classroom
observation has also been used as a research tool also to notice and be in direct contact with the
classroom environment and how it may affect students‟ performance. The results show that noise,
lack of space, lack of motivation and concentration are the most common problems in overcrowded
classes which hinder students‟ performance. The dissertation is divided up into two main chapters;
one is devoted to the theoretical background and the other for the practical side of the research. |
