The purpose of the present research is to raise students’ awareness towards the appropriate
use of English articles in writing. The underlying hypothesis is that if second year LMD
students of English become aware enough about the appropriate use of English articles, their
writing quality would be improved. The educational setting in which this study takes place is
the Department of Letters and English Language, University des frères Mentouri,
Constantine. 60 students are selected randomly from a total population of ≈ 320 second year
LMD students in addition to 17 teachers of Written Expression as a sample in the current
study. In order to achieve the aim of the undertaken research, answer the research questions
and attempt to test that validity of the stated hypothesis, two research tools are used; namely
teachers’ questionnaire and students’ questionnaire. Teachers’ questionnaire aims at exploring
teachers’ attitudes about their students’ awareness towards the appropriate use of English
articles in enhancing their writing quality. Besides, students’ questionnaire seeks to chek their
stands concerning the appropriate use of English articles for enhancing their writing quality.
The findings of the study are in the direction with our hypothesis and indicate that learners
who do not use articles appropriately have poor writing. Therefore, teachers are recommended
to use different techniques to raise their students’ awareness to the appropriate use of articles
while writing in English. |
