This study is an attempt to investigate the students’ knowledge of the cultural equivalent in
translating idioms from English into Arabic. The study seeks to answer the following questions:
1.What do third year students know about idioms? 2. Do third year students know about the
existence of a cultural equivalents in both Arabic and English languages when they translate
them? Based on these research questions, it is hypothesized that “If students have enough
background about idioms and about the culture of Arabic and English languages they will not
face difficulties in finding the appropriate cultural equivalents in both languages.” Two research
tools are used to conduct this study: A test and a questionnaire were administered to twenty
third-year students of English at the Department of Letters and English Language, University of
Constantine 1. The obtained results indicate that the students know about the existence of a
cultural equivalent of the English idiom in the Arabic language, but the majorities do not have
the necessary knowledge to translate them easily. As such, the first hypothesis was confirmed
and the second one was partially rejected |
