Résumé : |
The purpose of this study is to investigate various types of misusing prepositions and the
causes that lead first year students to commit them in their compositions. For this purpose, it
is hypothesized that an inadequate use of the English prepositions ‘‘At, In, On’’ in the
students’ compositions, lead to a poor academic writing performance. To test our hypothesis,
we used two basic tools: the first is a test that aims to identify first whether students master
the use of the prepositions in their assignments, or not, and the second to disclose the
difficulties encountered by the learners in using these prepositions. The second tool is a
questionnaire directed to written expression teachers to evaluate their opinions toward the use
of such prepositions. The results obtained indicate that first year LMD students of English at
Mentouri University are aware of some of the prepositions rules; however there is
inappropriate employment of those prepositions due to the interference of the mother tongue.
The findings gathered in this study confirmed the set hypothesis in that the problems students
face in writing can be avoided, and successful production can be achieved if they use
prepositions appropriately. |
