Résumé : |
Success in learning a foreign language is much more tide to how that language is taught and
learned. One of the most effective ways to enhance the quality of students’ oral production is to
develop autonomy in them, so that they will overcome their fears and take risk to improve their
speaking skill. The aim of this research work is to investigate the nature of relationship between
learnes’r autonomy development and risk-taking behaviour through specifying the way in
which autonomous learning affects Second Year studentsin the Department of Letters and
English Language risk-taking to gain a high level of speaking proficiency. In order to achieve
this aim, and to check the validity of our hypothesis: if Second Year students of English at
Mentouri Brothers University in Constantine develop autonomy, they will take risk to be
efficient speakers, data was collected through an exploratory means of research. Two
questionnaires were respectively submitted to Oral Expression teachers and Second Year
students at the Department of Letters and English Language at Mentouri Brothers University in
Constantine. The teachers’ questionnaire sought to obtain information about teachers’ role in
developing learners’ autonomy, their opinions about students’ engagement in risk-taking as
well as their attitudes towards risk-taking. The students’ questionnaire intended to gather data
about the extent to which Second Year students of English at Mentouri Brothers University can
learn autonomously and take the risk necessary for a successful oral achievement. The findings
we got from the analysis of the teachers’ questionnaire and the students’ questionnaire led us to
confirm our hypothesis, that developing autonomy in Second Year students of English at
Mentouri Brothers University in Constantine will lead them to take risk to be efficient speakers,
and also to suggest a number of topics to be researched in relation to their effects on risktaking as both teachers and students did emphasize the existence of other influencing variables
besides the positive effect of learners’ autonomy on risk-taking. |
