Résumé : |
Learning vocabulary in a second/foreign language requires the use of vocabulary learning
strategies which nowadays are receiving much attention in the field of second language
learning. This study aims at investigating vocabulary learning strategies used by outstanding
EFL students and to encourage learners with limited repertoire to use vocabulary learning
strategies in order to enrich their lexicon. We hypothesize that outstanding students would use
a variety of vocabulary learning strategies. To check the validity of our hypothesis we have first
carried out a pilot study, then conducted the main investigation which is made up of two
questionnaires. The first is completed by Master 1 Applied Languages outstanding students in
the Department of Letters and English Language, at University “Des Frères Mentouri”,
Constantine; The second is filled by teachers of Written Expression, Oral Expression,
Translation and English for Specific Purposes, from the same department. The findings show
that Master 1 outstanding students do indeed use a variety of vocabulary learning strategies,
which confirms our hypothesis. More specifically, they use the category of Determination
strategies. Equally, the results reveal that teachers are aware of the importance and usefulness
of vocabulary learning strategies for language learners. However, just a minority of them teach
and give instructions about these strategies during their classes. |
