Résumé : |
Most reading comprehension definitions found in the literature emphasize the importance
of the reader's prior knowledge in constructing meaning. Accordingly, the present study
aims at investigating the nature of the relationship between prior knowledge and reading
comprehension. We hypothesise that there is a positive correlation between the learners’
prior knowledge and their reading comprehension. This study has been carried out
involving 59 EFL third year students at Frères Mentouri University in Constantine. It has
been conducted through designing two tests; the first test assesses the learners’ prior
knowledge and the second one assesses their reading comprehension. The obtained results
are analysed to clearly show the relationship between the students’ scores of prior
knowledge and their reading comprehension scores in both sections. To determine the
nature of this relationship, we applied the correlation coefficient (r) which reveals a strong
positive correlation between the two variables. In other words, it demonstrated that the
learners’ prior knowledge has a positive effect on their reading comprehension. |
