In this study, we hypothesized that first year students did not participate in oral courses because of linguistic problems such as vocabulary and grammatical mistakes as well as some psychological problems like anxiety and shyness. Our work was divided into two parts: a theoretical part and a practical one. The theoretical part involved two chapters. In this part we made a general overview about speaking skills, discussed in a detailed way the various obstacles that prevented the students’ from speaking, and at last, suggested some techniques and activities that teachers of foreign languages could use as solutions for the stated difficulties. The practical part involved one chapter. In this part the methodology adopted to conduct the research was explained. This part consisted of a questionnaire an interview. The data obtained from the questionnaire and the interview indicated that there were some factors that affected the students’ speaking skill in oral expression course. It was revealed in the test that the main problem as the students themselves recognized in the questionnaire was mostly related to vocabulary and to a lesser extent to grammar. In addition to linguistic problems; some students seemed to have some psychological problems like anxiety and/shyness.
