Résumé : |
One of the most notable issues in the field of second language acquisition is the role of the
first language in the EFL classrooms. The debate over whether or not to use L1 while teaching
and learning a foreign language is very complex, and different attitudes and beliefs have been
held toward this issue. In this research, we aimed to find out how teachers and students view
first language use in a foreign language classroom. In other words, we intended to investigate
the teachers‟ and students‟ perceptions of using first language and its impact on the foreign
language teaching and learning. Accordingly, we hypothesized that if the first language is
used appropriately without any exaggeration, it would be a helpful means in the foreign
language teaching and learning process. In order to investigate such hypothesis, two
questionnaires were distributed to teachers and students. The teachers questionnaire was given
to twenty EFL teachers in the department of English at Constantine University, and the
students questionnaire was handed in to sixty students of second year LMD in the same
department. The questionnaires demonstrated that the mother tongue is used by the majority
of the student participants who believe that instead of being ignored, first language can play a
supportive and a facilitating role in learning a foreign language. On the other hand, the
teachers‟ views regarding L1 use were different from the students‟ views. Approximately, all
of them encourage the exclusive use of English in the classroom because they believe that
first language use can hinder the progress of mastering the target language. |
