Résumé : |
The speaking skill is one of the important skills in studying English as a foreign language since
students use it to express their oral capacities. Yet, there are different factors that impede them
from being competent speakers among which crowded classrooms. The present research sets out
to get insight the effect of crowded classrooms on students’ oral performance at the Department
of Letters and English, University Les Frères Mentouri. We hypothesize that if students study
oral expression in crowded classrooms, their oral performance would be poor. The hypothesis is
tested through a Teachers’ Questionnaire and a Students’ Classroom Observation. The findings
obtained allow to validate the hypothesis. The majority of the teachers have said that they face
many difficulties when teaching crowded classrooms like noise and the difficulty of maintaining
discipline which is the reason behind students’ poor oral performance since teachers cannot give
students equal chances to speak and cannot correct their mistakes. The Students’ Classroom
Observation revealed that students are neither fluent nor accurate during the production of their
speech and have problems in delivering the message in English appropriately. On the basis of
these findings, recommendations are suggested to the Department of Letters and English to
minimize the number of students per group in order to produce competent speakers. |
