Résumé : |
The co-existence of the Deductive and the Inductive Method for teaching
Grammar has led teachers and researchers to carry out experiments to find the
best mode and to choose the appropriate method that suits the learners’ needs.
Choosing one of them mainly depends on the nature of the subject, the level of
the learners, and the goal to be achieved. Sometimes, the combination of the two
methods becomes more useful. The present study investigates the most
appropriate method to teach the Past Simple in English as a Foreign Language
class and its influence on students’ level. This dissertation seeks for confirming
the following hypothesis: Learners will understand the use of the past simple if
the teacher chooses the appropriate method to teach this grammatical element. In
order to test our hypothesis, we have carried out quantitative research through
the use of the two questionnaires that are directed to Second Year Grammar
teachers and Second Year University Students studying English as a Foreign
Language at the University “Des Frères Mentouri”, Constantine. The result of
the analysis has shown that the two methods have a significant role in presenting
a Grammar class. Concerning the Past Simple, both teachers and students have
been in agreement about the efficiency of the Deductive Method to teach/ learn
the Past Simple. Consequently, this research corroborates our suggestion that the
teacher’s choice of the appropriate method to present the Past Simple which is
the Deductive Method, conducting from the data collected, helps learners to
understand the use of the Past Simple. |
