The present research investigates the comprehension problems of technical texts that Master
One Linguistics and Applied Languages students face. The main aim of the study is to figure
out the problems encountered by students and their sources, discuss the possible solutions and
try to alleviate such problems to make English for Science and Technology (EST) learning
easier. To reach this end, a descriptive case study research is conducted using two research
instruments: a questionnaire and a test. the questionnaire investigates the students' worries and
problems with EST. The test is based on observing the students‟ reading and understanding
technical texts during an ordinary EST session. The results obtained through the two research
tools reveal that Master One Linguistics and Applied Languages students face comprehension
problems when reading technical texts. Data analysis shows that the factors affecting their
comprehension level are the insufficient time devoted to the EST course, students‟ low level
of proficiency, inappropriate teaching methods and materials, inappropriate EST teacher
training. As an outcome of these findings, the researcher has proposed some suggestions and
recommendations to raise students‟ level of reading comprehension of technical texts as well
as to improve the status of EST. |
