This research work seeks to shed light on the problem of cross-linguistic influence between
French and English. More specifically, it investigates the main reason behind the inaccurate
pronunciation of the French-English cognates containing the spelling combinations /im/, /in/,
and /yn/, among the first year Master students of Applied Languages at the University of
Frères Mentouri, Constantine 1. This study postulates that the major cause of such a
pronunciation would be the students‟ pronunciation background in French. In particular, the
studied combinations are systematically pronounced as the French nasal vowel / / an d that
most students would not be aware of their mispronunciation because they lack an explicit
contrastive teaching between the French pronunciation and the English one. In order to test
these hypotheses, two research tools are used: a questionnaire and a recording test. The
results reveal that most students‟ inaccurate pronunciation of the spelling combinations /in/,
/im/, and /yn/ in French-English cognates is mainly attributed to the influence of the French
nasal vowel / /. Therefore, students ought to have an explicit contrastive teaching between the
French pronunciation and the English one to be aware about the different pronunciations of
cognates in both languages and they will be able to recognize the differences and similarities
between the two phonological systems. Thus, the hypotheses are confirmed. |
