This work is an attempt to diagnose the problematic areas that make the difference within levels of both categories of students with the objective of finding possible solutions to balance all students' level. Therefore, we hypothesise that if First year Master students of Applied Linguistics belonged to the scientific stream during high school, their level in comprehending EST texts is likely to be better than the level of students who belonged to the literary stream. In an attempt to test the validity of the hypothesis, a sample of twenty four First Year Master Applied Linguistics Learners from the Department of English, University of Constantine 1 is purposefully chosen; a questionnaire and a test are used as means to gather the needed data. The results obtained from these two means are analyzed and compared and the outcomes of the study prove the hypothesis. Results have showed that the level of scientific students in comprehending Scientific and technical texts is better than the level of Literary students. Hence, students who used to belong to the Literary stream during high school years have more difficulties in understanding scientific/technical texts.
