Résumé : |
The immense global spread of English has led to its emergence as a very diverse language
with a considerable number of varieties. However, the British and the American varieties remain the most used and the most influential among them all. The latter has been making a lot of
ink flow in recent years and started gaining more ground. The aim of this research is to investigate the teachers’ attitudes and perceptions vis-à -vis the use of American English in teaching and
learning English as a language. Therefore, it was hypothesized that some teachers are opposed
to American English because they do not consider it as suitable accent to be adopted. To examine
this issue, a questionnaire that has been carefully designed to serve the purpose, has been administered to a sample of English teachers at the department of English at the University of frère
Mentouri Constantine one. The findings have revealed that the striking majority of teachers are
not completely against using American English in teaching and learning English, yet they do not
recommend it to their pupils either and remain in favour of British English. |
