Résumé : |
Abbreviations became a natural case of verbal communication not only in in certain language
space, but also in daily life speech. Over and above, using abbreviations is a quite affective
mean for raising EFL learners’ prowess and accomplishment. Using abbreviations therefore
gives rise to a fund of learning difficulties to students of English at the department of English
University Mentouri, Constantine. Thus, the long-term aim of the present study is to
investigate the crucial role that the abbreviations play in raising English Foreign Language
Learners’ proficiency. Unreservedly, it is hypothesized that behind the difficulties that
students encounter whilst identifying the abbreviations’ types, abbreviating, and translating
them there would lie a number of factors, namely interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer,
lack of reading, to name but a few. Thus, an experimental study is conducted to test the
hypothesis using two diagnostic tests. The present study’s hypothesis is ultimately accredited
through both tests which show a rudimentary knowledge of abbreviations. The tests are also
administered to elicit further information about our sample’s (Twenty Master one Students of
Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at the department of English University Mentouri,
Constantine 1) use of abbreviations. The description and analysis of the findings compiled
from the two tests have proven the hypothesis valid. In view of what have been said, it is
highly recommended to include abbreviations in the writing (grammar) syllabus. |
