Résumé : |
English language learning has become a difficult task for foreign language learners
particularly second year students at the department of arts and English, University of
Constantine 1, whenever it comes to a crucial lesson in grammar namely phrasal verbs.
Phrasal verbs are widely spread in both formal and informal contexts of the English language;
they have a very important role in both written and spoken forms. In this study, we are going
to shed light on the most significant problems second year students face dealing with phrasal
verbs. The purpose of this study is to discuss why students misuse and misunderstand such
cultural linguistic items. Therefore, it is hypothesized that the more students make efforts to
understand the right meaning of phrasal verbs, the better they will be able to use them
accurately and appropriately. To confirm the validity of the research hypothesis, we
administer a questionnaire to a sample of 20 teachers teaching Grammar and Written
Expression mainly. A test of two activities is also submitted to a sample of 30 second year
students at the Department of English University of Constantine 1, Algeria to test their use
and understanding of phrasal verbs basically. The questionnaire aims at exploring the
teachers’ opinions and attitudes about phrasal verbs and their importance in the teaching and
learning process; furthermore, the test intends to figure out to what extent students use this
component accurately. The obtained results show that most second year students are not
aware of the right use of such cultural components; they misunderstand their meaning so they
use them incorrectly. To end up, the gathered data confirm the research hypothesis. Last but
not least, the research is presented through two major chapters dealing with the theoretical
background of the research variables and the analysis of the data provided, respectively |
