Résumé : |
The current research aims to investigate teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards the role that
vocabulary plays in enhancing students’ speaking performance. The underlying hypothesis is that if
second year LMD students of English had rich vocabulary, their speaking performance would be
developed. The educational setting in which this study takes place is the Department of Letters and
English Language, University des Frères Mentouri, Constantine. 64 students were selected randomly
from a total population of ≈320 second year LMD students in addition to 17 teachers of Oral
Expression (OE henceforth) as samples in the present study. In order to reach the purpose of the
undertaken study, answer the research questions and attempt to confirm the validity of the stated
hypothesis, two tools are used; namely teachers’ questionnaire and students’ questionnaire. Teachers’
questionnaire aims at exploring teachers’ attitudes towards the role of vocabulary knowledge in
developing students’ speaking performance. In addition, students’ questionnaire seeks to check their
opinions about in what extent that having rich vocabulary can help them to improve their speaking
performance. The findings of the study are in the direction of the hypothesis and indicate that when
second year LMD students had rich vocabulary, their speaking performance would develop.
Moreover, teachers are recommended to use various strategies and activities to develop their
students’ vocabulary knowledge during the speaking tasks. |
