Résumé : |
In the development of human life, language has played a crucial role as a means of
communication among people. Nowadays, speaking English becomes important and
necessary. Among the four skills of English, speaking and writing are considered the most
important. Departing from the fact that spoken language breaks grammar rules while written
language abides by academic grammar rules, the present dissertation investigates the use of
aspects of spoken grammar in the academic compositions of second year students of English
at Mentouri University, Constantine 1. Accordingly, we hypothesized that if students under
study are aware of the features of spoken grammar, their academic writing will be developed.
We also hypothesized that if students receive background knowledge of the spoken grammar,
they will avoid using it in their academic compositions. The two hypotheses were checked by
means of a students’ questionnaire and a test as part of the questionnaire. The findings
collected validate the first hypothesis and abstractly affirm the second one. The majority of
participants were found to be unaware of the existence of spoken grammar and its aspects.
The findings also show that the majority of participants agree that spoken grammar has a
negative influence on their academic writing. On the basis of these results, the teaching of
spoken grammar appears to be important as it makes the students aware of the aspects that
should not be used in academic writing |
