Résumé : |
This study intends to shed light on the English as a foreign language (henceforth, EFL)
students‟, precisely second year LMD of English at Frères Mentouri University-Constantine
1, comprehension of English jokes. To put differently, this research is mainly concerned with
investigating the correlation between the cultural knowledge and the linguistic proficiency
and the comprehension of English jokes. For this end, a questionnaire has been used as the
main and only research tool to answer the following questions:
-To what extent do the linguistic proficiency and cultural knowledge influence EFL students‟
understanding of English jokes?
-What is the most difficult type of English jokes to EFL students? Why?
The eighteen questionnaires gathered have been analysed qualitatively and using percentages.
The obtained results confirm the two hypotheses; the linguistic proficiency and cultural
knowledge influences the comprehension of jokes. In addition, the culture-based joke is the
most difficult type of joke for EFL students. |
