Reading in Enhancing Learners Vocabulary Proficiency |

Résumé : |
Reading is one of the most complex tasks the student may encounter when learning a foreign
language. The process is difficult to achieve because it requires a strong vocabulary reservoir.
Due to the complexity of this skill, every aspect should be taken into consideration when
learning a foreign language. One of the most important aspects that need to be developed is
vocabulary. The latter is an essential element to learn any language. However, many students
fail to enhance vocabulary. Hence the main purpose of this study is to investigate the role of
reading in enhancing learners’ vocabulary. In addition, we want to make students aware of the
importance of reading as the most effective means of enlarging their vocabulary. In this
research work, the hypothesis states that if third year students of English at university are
effectively instructed to read, they would significantly improve their vocabulary. To test this
hypothesis, a questionnaire and a test were administered to third year students of English at
Frères Mentouri University 1, Constantine, to examine the impact of reading on enhancing
their vocabulary and to see their reaction to some difficult words. The obtained data from
questionnaire and test indicate that students’ lack of vocabulary can be improved through
reading, which confirms the validity of the hypothesis. |
