The present study aims at investigating the difficulties middle school pupils face while
learning the English vowels and the reasons behind them. We hypothesize that middle school
learners find it laborious to learn the English vowels due to many reasons, namely time factor
and teaching techniques and materials. To check our hypothesis a questionnaire was directed
to a random sample of 16 teachers from different middle schools in Constantine. The analysis
of data has shown that pupils do face serious difficulties in learning the English vowels and
find obstacles in distinguishing between them, especially vowels that are written in the same
form and pronounced differently. The study results have also revealed that the main reasons
for this major hindrance is time factor, that is to say; the time devoted to teaching and
practicing vowels is not sufficient. Another reason is that most teachers rely only on the
written exercises and ignore the oral ones. Hence, as a remedy for this problem, we
recommend that teachers should give enough time for teaching and practicing vowels. In
addition, they have to be careful while choosing the techniques and the materials they use
while teaching vowels to beginner learners |
