Résumé : |
It is a challenge to find ways for students to improve their speaking skill in the learning of a
foreign language. Bearing this in mind, teachers should encourage speaking activities in a
natural atmosphere to help students refine their speaking skill. The present study aims at
showing how important and effective debate can be in encouraging students to speak up and
express themselves. It is hypothesized that both teachers and students believe that debates
would help students raise their speaking proficiency. To help us find answers and support our
hypothesis, a questionnaire is administered to eight teachers specialized in Oral Expression,
and another questionnaire is administered to sixty seven third-year English language students
from Frères Mentouri University Constantine 1, to assist us in collecting data that would
eventually show that students could indeed improve their speaking skills through debates. The
results we obtained demonstrated that both teachers and students have positive attitudes
towards the effectiveness of debates in improving the spoken language. Hence, our hypothesis
is confirmed and we suggest debating as an important activity in the enhancement of students’
speaking competencies, given the data collected. |
