Résumé : |
Academic writing is considered a fundamental channel of learning a foreign language as it
improves considerably learners’ language proficiency. In English as a Foreign Language
settings, writing is thought to be the most arduous and challenging skill for learners to
acquire. Due to its complex nature, students tend to overlook some developmental stages that
lead to the production of well written compositions. Therefore, the present study investigates
the drive of third year Bachelor’s Degree students of English at Mentouri University to deal
with writing as a developmental process that entails different stages. Furthermore, it examines
the influence of the Process Approach to teaching writing on students’ writing skill and
identifies the different obstacles that may arise in the absence of a structured process of
writing. Accordingly, we hypothesized that the use of the Process Approach to writing would
help students in writing well written compositions. To verify the hypothesis, a writing test and
a questionnaire are administered to a sample of thirty students. The findings of the
investigation validate the hypothesis. The results of the questionnaire reveal that students hold
a positive attitude towards following the different stages of writing. The results obtained from
the test yield that the use of the writing process helps the students who follow the stages of the
writing process in writing good compositions compared to those who do not. As a matter of
fact, they encounter various obstacles in their process of compiling their writing mainly in
communicating their ideas, establishing a correct organizational structure and maintaining
grammar accuracy. |
