Résumé : |
Communication Strategies are strategies used by speakers of a foreign language to repair
communication breakdowns and achieve their communicative goals in case of insufficient
linguistic knowledge. This research study is an attempt to investigate different aspects of
learners’ use of CSs. It aims to explore the relation between learners’ proficiency levels and
their strategy use. It also aims at investigating learners’ attitudes concerning CS use and CS
instruction. We hypothesised that the more proficient learners would use a wider range of CSs
and, thus, would be in control of their communicative skills in the foreign language. To test
the validity of this hypothesis, an online questionnaire is administered to first year master
students at the Department of English, University of Frères Mentouri - Constantine 1. The
results of the analysis of the data confirm the research hypothesis. The findings also suggest
learners’ lack of awareness concerning CSs despite their extensive use of these strategies in
their oral production of English. The study leads to recommendations concerning strategy
instruction through raising learners’ awareness on the importance of CSs and the different
types of CSs available to overcome communication breakdowns when using the foreign
language. |
