Résumé : |
The aim of this study is to test the effectiveness of tactile books and overhead
speakers as teaching materials used to teach vocabulary to visually impaired
learners. The underlying hypothesis is that if teachers of English as a foreign
language visually impaired learners use tactile books and overhead speakers, this
will improve the learners‟ use of the language. In order to test this hypothesis, we
had originally intended to have a classroom observation, a quasi-experiment, a
teacher‟s questionnaire and a pupils‟ interview. However, because the school has
been closed since March 2020 due to the COVID (Corona Virus Disease) 19
pandemic, we designed two interviews: an interview for the teachers of English as a
foreign language in “Hacène Benhakoul Middle School, Constantine” and an
interview for visually impaired pupils. It has to be mentioned that we could
interview only one pupil in June 2020. Both interviews were possible when the
school opened in June 2020 for end of year evaluation. For this case, we have
designed a tactile book, as a teaching aid, in order test our hypothesis. The tactile
book designed was presented to the teacher and after careful examinations and
explanations, the teachers evaluated it. The tactile book was also introduced to the
visually impaired pupil. We explained the concept of the tactile book and we had a
three hours session, during which we have presented the tactile book, so that the
pupil could have an overview on it and answer the pupils‟ interview. After analysing
both interviews, the results showed that the use of tactile books and overhead
iv
speakers to teach visually impaired learners improved the visually impaired pupils‟
vocabulary, thus it confirms our hypothesis. The positive effectiveness of the use of
tactile books and overhead speakers to teach visually impaired learners English as a
foreign language vocabulary is highlighted throughout this study as well as the
limitations and the causes that prevent from using them. Yet, this is a problem that
can easily be remedied by teachers first then by educational and academic
institutions. |
