The present study is conducted to analyse EFL students’ ability to collocate the verbs
“end, finish, terminate and conclude” in order to spot the most common problems that
may face these students during the process of collocation. The aim of this study is to
highlight the obstacles that EFL students face when collocating and to improve their
comprehension of these collocations either on the lexical or the semantic level. To the
best of our knowledge, the verbs mentioned so far constitute a real gap as they have not
been sufficiently investigated in this context. In the pursuit of this endeavor, a test was
administered to 20 students at the English language department, Mentouri University,
Constantine 1. The findings have shown that there is a great number of second-year
students who are not familiar with the notions collocations and synonymous verbs and
cannot decide in many occasions which word fits better in a specific situation. In the light
of the findings designated, the study recommends that EFL teaching programs should pay
more attention to the teaching of collocations as they play a great role in learning
vocabulary and the culture of the English language |
