Résumé : |
As it is known translation is the replacement of textual material in one language that is the
source language (SL) by equivalent textual material in second language which is the target
language (TL), so translation is a process performed by people in order to communicate
through time by translating expressions, words, sentences.... But indeed it is more than that; it
is a process that requires taking into consideration several points one of the main is culture
aspects. Translating Culture is a challenge and this mainly due to the differences between
cultures. With cultural expressions, the meaning which lies behind this kind of expression is
always strongly linked to the specific cultural context it aims to re-create. Sometimes, cultural
expressions can be easily rendered into the TL but in other kinds of terms it is often
impossible, and this is illustrate what Nida (1964) said: “differences between cultures may
cause more serious problems for the translator than do differences in language structure”.
Moreover, there are several strategies used to achieve kind of translation. The research aimed
at figuring out the problems and difficulties that encountered the Master one applied linguistic
students at University of Constantine 1, department of English Language while translating
cultural expressions and items from English into Arabic and vice versa; as well the strategies
they employ and resort to whenever they come across any difficulty. In this respect, the study
conducts through a questionnaire and a translation test. The questionnaire consists of eleven
questions related to translation in general, and cultural expressions translation problems. In
addition, strategies used to achieve an appropriate translation taking into consideration the
culture of both languages; however the test contains of cultural expressions such as proverbs,
idioms and collocations, has been asked to translate theme from source language to the target
language with keeping their cultural counterparts. |
