The present research is a qualitative and quantitative study carried out to provide an example
of the difficulties faced when translating from French into English by Third-year students at the
Department of Translation, at Frère Mentouri Constantine 1. It aims at highlighting the aberrations
occurring from lexical mutual objects in both languages; i.e. the magnitude of the problems that
result from the notion of false friends. Thus, it is hypothesized that if translation learners
understand the similarities and differences between the source language and the target language,
they will avoid negative language transfer and the trap of false friends. The hypothesis was
evaluated by an analytical study inferred from the results of an online questionnaire and a test. The
findings show that false friends resulting from linguistic reciprocity and student ignorance about
them are a crucial problem for the learners after the treatment of the observed errors. Accordingly,
the hypothesis was validated. Some recommendations are suggested to teachers and learners of
translation to deal with this problem on the basis of the obtained results |
