Résumé : |
The present study investigates one significant issue in the field of English for Science
and Technology (henceforth EST) which is the problems English as a Foreign
Language (henceforth EFL) learners face when identifying semi-technical words.
This work is an attempt to find out the source of the issue with the objective of
finding possible solutions to clear it. For this purpose, we hypothesise that if first
year Master students of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies are intensively
exposed to semi-technical words, they will not have problems identifying them. In an
attempt to test the validity of the hypothesis and answer the research questions, a
sample of seventeen first year Master Linguistics and Applied Language Studies
students from the Department of English, University of Constantine 1, answers a
questionnaire before a quasi-experiment is carried out through which they get
exposed more to semi-technical vocabulary. The findings of the questionnaire reveal
that the members of the sample face difficulties in identifying semi-technical words
due to insufficient exposure to scientific and technical texts in general and semitechnical lexis in particular. The results obtained from the quasi-experiment show
that intensive exposure helps in getting rid of those problems, which confirms the
research hypothesis. |
