Speech Act of Request to Address obstacles met by second-year Master students. |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
This study is a qualitative and quantitative investigation achieved to bring out the difficulties
and obstacles met by second-year Master students specialised in Linguistics and Applied
Language Studies at the Department of English, Frères Mentouri University-Constantine 1,
when they perform the speech act of request to interact with higher social authority (teachers)
via email. This research is raised to answer the presented questions and to verify the
hypothesis which says: “EFL students are not explicitly taught how to write a formal request
email; therefore, they are not aware enough of how to generate one.” Twenty one (21)
subjects were randomly selected to answer the questionnaire concerning their experience with
English as a foreign language, and if they are knowledgeable enough about the main topic of
the dissertation. Also, they were given a test in a form of a scenario to follow and to write a
formal request email in order to test their effectiveness, and to see if they are aware while
applying the aspects and features of the speech act. The analysis of the obtained findings state
that, the participants were unconsciously and randomly applying the strategies of the speech
acts of request, which make their performance unsuccessful. Also, it confirmed that secondyear Master students in the option of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, are in need
for an academic tutoring to enhance their competence in performing the speech act of request
to address their “superiors” teachers/ professors. On the basis of the results obtained, some
recommendations are suggested to solve such a problem |
