Résumé : |
The present study aims at investigating about the students’ level of English and we try to
explore if learning the language is changing anything about their personalities or attitudes
toward their culture or in the society. Thus, we want to have an idea if the increasing need of
learning the language is causing any opposite relation toward the learners’ cultural identity.
This dissertation will be detailed into two chapters. The first chapter that it entitled as
“Language, Culture, Identity and Cultural Identity” will be devised into two sections. The first
section will tackle both the notions of language and culture; we have drawn some of the
definitions, characteristics, their nature, the relationship between the terms and mentioned one
of the well known scholars in the domain of language and culture “G. Hofstede” with his
dimensions. While in the second section will deal with identity and cultural identity where we
have defined both terms and mentioned some types and stages of both identity and cultural
identity, in addition to the dimensions of cultural identity. Eventually, the second chapter will
turn around the research methodology of the dissertation. In this context, we hypothesize that
if the learners are increasingly learning the English language, this will somehow change their
cultural identity. In order to confirm our hypothesis we addressed two questionnaires, one to a
sample of master one degree methodology of teaching foreign languages students, around 20,
and a randomly selected teachers, around 10, at the level of the English department,
University Mentouri Brothers, Constantine 01. The result obtained from the research paper
showed that the learners’ don’t see their cultural identity affected by the English language. As
for the teachers, they agree that their students are affected by the language, yet their cultural
identity is not fully affected by the English language because as Algerians they live under
some conditions and this will make them surrounded by both cultural identities. |
