Résumé : |
This study puts to question the validity of the theory of idiolect through an exercise of authorship
attribution. This is a theory that advances the notion of style and language being indicators of
the identity of the author. The theory remains highly contested and is generally dismissed as a
mere abstract theory or thought experiment. The research at hand serves therefore to verify this
conventional consideration by putting the theory to test through an analysis of a corpus of texts.
The empirical chapter undertakes an exercise of authorship through a stylistic and a stylometric
analysis of language. The aim of the exercise is to identify the author of previously anonymous
text messages, which would add to the body of literature seeking to empirically test the theory
of idiolect. The main contribution of the research remains the original set of data compiled and
its analysis. The data offers a novel line of consideration to the theory of idiolect as it comprises
of text messages authored by non-native speakers of English. In pursuit of achieving the goals
stated, a stylistic and a stylometric analysis of five known and one disputed texts was held and
revealed that: 1) It is indeed possible to identify authorship through an analysis of language and
2) the theory of idiolect does possess an empirical value. However, though the nature of corpora
did not hinder the attribution process, the use of small corpora poses insignificant limitations
that could be avoided by using larger corpora. |
