Résumé : |
Conditionals have been a central area of investigation for centuries. However, despite the time
and efforts spent by many linguists and researchers, conditionals remain a challenging area,
especially for EFL /ESL learners. This research work seeks to investigate second year
students of English attitudes towards the use of conditional statements. It also attempts to
analyze their performance in order to identify the main difficulties the students usually face
when dealing with conditional situations. Therefore, we hypothesized that second year
students of English would find difficulties in the perception and production of conditional
sentences as the latter have different forms and interpretations. To verify the validity of the
hypothesis, a questionnaire and a test were administered to a sample of 30 second year
students of English, at Frères Mentouri University, Constantine. The results obtained from
both data collection tools revealed that the majority of students under investigation hold a
negative attitude when dealing with conditional type two and three situations. They indeed
mix tenses of the two types. Accordingly, students’ misconception about the time-tense
relationship and their misinterpretation of the conditional statement are the main problematic
aspects. Furthermore, the findings yielded the students’ lack of conditional knowledge in
general as they are not fully aware of the different conditional structures, which consequently
affect their production. Therefore, to remedy this problem, further practice inside or outside
the classroom would encourage students to gain more knowledge about the subject and to test
their abilities in interpreting conditional situations. |
