Résumé : |
Nowadays, speaking English is undoubtedly crucial since the English language has
become the global language used by people who speak different tongues. Due to the new
technologies and the advances of the modern world, people seem to need a shared language to
use in order to communicate and exchange cultures with others. The English language offers
the opportunity to do so since they use it in their travels, to get better jobs and especially in
education. Thus, to master the English language, the mastery of the speaking skill must take
place. It is a fact that EFL learners around the world encounter difficulties in developing the
ability of speaking the target language. As a result, they cannot succeed to be fluent speakers
unless they are provided with the teachers’ guidance through the use of different techniques to
help them overcome these difficulties. Teachers must take into account the significance of the
speaking skill and, therefore, introduce learners with one of the most believed techniques in
developing this skill, in-class debate technique. The purpose of this research is to explore the
teachers’ attitudes towards the effectiveness of classroom debate in enhancing EFL students’
speaking competence. To carry out this study, we chose a quantitative descriptive method.
The teachers’ questionnaire is the only one tool of research which was used to collect data.
The obtained data which were carefully analysed reveal that Oral Expression teachers’
involved in this study hold positive attitudes regarding the relationship between the speaking
skill and the in-class debate technique. In addition, they show their agreement on the
effectiveness of the debate technique in boosting oral proficiency. As a result, our stated
hypothesis- If Oral Expression teachers used in-class debate technique in their classes, then
learners’ speaking skill would enhance- is confirmed. We conclude, then, that the use of inclass debate is a vital and a successful technique which can develop the speaking skill of EFL
students. |
