Résumé : |
The present study tries to explore the role of Intelligent Personal Assistants (IPAs) such as Siri
and Google Assistant for autonomous second language learning at university Constantine 1. In
particular, this research aims at investigating EFL students’ views and perceptions towards
Google Assistant for L2 learning. The work is divided into two chapters. The first chapter is a
literature review of the studies related to the topic. It is composed of three sections. The first
section is an overview of learner autonomy. The second section is devoted to Mobile-Assisted
Language Learning (MALL) and its importance for promoting learner autonomy in foreign
language learning. And the third section is concerned with the role of IPAs (precisely Google
Assistant) for learner autonomy. Although this study is the first to investigate IPAs for
autonomous second language learning, it is hypothesized that university Constantine 1 EFL
students have favorable attitudes and views towards Google Assistant for L2 learner autonomy.
The second chapter is the practical part, including three sections covering the following titles:
methodology and data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and discussion of the
findings, suggestions and recommendations. To realize the present project, 34 EFL students
volunteered to participate in the case study which is composed of a survey and an observation.
Before conducting the actual research, a pilot questionnaire was administered (online via social
media platforms) to 119 EFL learners (from different levels) to test the feasibility of the study
in the context. Then, another questionnaire was administered to the 34 participants, before
giving them a smartphone to interact with the IPA during a single 30 minutes session in their
free time at the university. Afterwards, the learners were asked to use their IPAs at home for a
period of one week. Then, they answered another questionnaire to assess their views and
perceptions of the IPA. Results from the findings show that university Frères Mentouri EFL
students’ perceptions and views toward IPAs for ASLL are positive in that they were able to
practice their English language skills in and outside the formal setting, have meaningful
interactions, have fun, and search and gather information. |
