Résumé : |
This study is concerned with the identification and analysis of pronunciation errors that result
from confusing the vowel sounds /ɑ:/ vs /æ/ and /u:/ vs /ʊ/. We hypothesise that these errors
are attributed to two major sources: the overgeneralization of the pronunciation of a sound on
a specific spelling and the influence of the American English system of pronunciation. This
research seeks to explore the degree to which these sources affect the pronunciation of the
target vowel sounds by students. To check the validity of the hypotheses, a test is
administered to a random sample of third year students of English at Frères Mentouri
University of Constantine 1. The obtained results reveal that two pre-determined sources
appear to be the causes of student’s difficulties in distinguishing between /ɑ:/ and /æ/ and
affect the pronunciation of these vowels sounds to considerable extent. The results also
indicate that the previous sources have no significant impact on students’ pronunciation of /u:/
and /ÊŠ/ since they do not confuse between the two sounds. Eventually, some pedagogical
recommendations have been provided |
