Résumé : |
English foreign language learners usually face problems in the English grammar; especially in
the use of prepositions due to several reasons, one of which is the influence of the mother
tongue. This work aims at investigating the influence of Standard Arabic on the use of the
English prepositions in, on, and at among learners of English as a foreign language. The
research study attempts to identify whether these learners are facing difficulties and misusing
the English prepositions due to standard Arabic interference or not.. It is hypothesized that “if
EFL learners were negatively influenced by their Standard Arabic, they would misuse the
English prepositions “in , on , at”. For that purpose a grammar test was given to test the
students‟ use of prepositions at sentence and discourse levels. In order to check the credibility
the research hypothesis, a random sample of 50 students from the total population of first year
English students at the University of Frères Mentouri Constantine 1 was selected. Thus the
results of the test has shown that first year students do transfer negatively from the Standard
Arabic and this can be the reason behind their errors concerning the use of the prepositions (in
, on , at) |
