Résumé : |
The present study is conducted to investigate one of the serious problems encountered in
translation; that is, the translation of collocations. This research work attempts to test the
students’ knowledge of English collocations; whether or not they know how to collocate
words. Furthermore, it aims to identify the strategies of translation adopted when translating
collocations from English into Arabic. A test which consists of three tasks was administrated
to 30 third year students of English, at Frères Mentouri Constantine 1 University. The results
revealed that the participants' performance in the test was considerably poor. The findings
showed that the majority of the students were not familiar with the English collocations, and
they were unable to translate them adequately into Arabic. Likewise, the findings revealed
that the students used different strategies for translating collocations. Therefore, the students
should read and listen to authentic materials in English so that they can train themselves to
master English collocations. Furthermore, foreign language teachers should consider giving
lectures to raise the students awareness of collocations and about the nature of words grouped
together to form acceptable collocations. Translation teachers should also draw the students’
attention to the strategies of translating collocations. |
