Résumé : |
The present study aims at investigating the issue of the interference of the aspects of the
mother tongue on EFL learners’ written productions. Learners of the English language are
trying to facilitate the process of learning by using their mother tongue while writing. The
objective of learning a language requires mastering the four language skills and writing is one
of these skills. However, interfering with the mother tongue during the process of writing
makes it difficult to reach this objective. This phenomenon is observed among second year
students in the department of English at Fréres Mentouri University because they commit
different errors in their writings. The current study aims at identifying EFL learners’ mistakes
that are committed due to the mother tongue interference. Through this study it is
hypothesized that using the aspects of the mother tongue while writing in English would
affect negatively the writing process. To achieve this purpose, a mixed method design is used
in which two questionnaires were administered to 30 students and 10 teachers of Written
Expression, in addition to a corpus of 30 essays that have been considered for the purpose to
see the students’ performance in writing. The results obtained from the analysis of the
collected data have shown that EFL learners commit different types of errors that are due to
the mother tongue interference which in turn confirms the research hypothesis. |
